This year is very much a transition year for Fife Golfing Association. The introduction of a new constitution has resulted in a smaller executive council of 6 members with each member taking on a convenorship directly related to the main activities of the association. The new executive is a blend of “experience and more experience” enhanced by a lot of enthusiasm. All convenors have settled in well over the first month of their tenure and have been working hard to ensure that matches, tournaments, events and coaching programmes are well organised and planned ahead of the main golfing season starting in earnest.

To improve our operations, we have adopted the Scottish Golf App to assist with the administration of our championships to streamline competition administration, cut costs and reduce the burden of running the championships. Even in these very early days for the new Executive this is proving to be a good move.
However there is much work to be done behind the scenes to review strategy and existing policies, to develop the website and to make sure that we are responding to the current needs of affiliated clubs and their members. The support, co-operation and feedback from clubs is very important and the Executive believe that working together we can live up to the mantle of Fife being the “Home of Golf” which is particularly significant this year with the Open Championship returning to St Andrews for the 150th playing of the championship. Many of our affiliated clubs will be playing their part in the Open supplying marshalls, scorers and filling other volunteer roles. One of the aims of the new executive is to engage more with clubs, increase contact wherever possible and to help and advise whenever needed particularly in relation to the club services provided by Scottish Golf.

As the new season gets underway, the mens, juniors and seniors events are eagerly awaited by the players. We are in the process of reviewing and developing a new coaching strategy for Fife which we will roll out late summer/early autumn to take us over the winter period. However, we are trying to fit in a taster trial session late April/early May to generate some interest.

Whilst it is undoubtedly a great honour to be the President of Fife Golfing Association it is undoubtedly also a challenge. There is much to be done and much to be considered. I can assure you that your executive council will be working very hard to maintain the high standards of our predecessors. We aim to run our championships in a professional manner for the enjoyment of all competitors and to develop and select teams at all levels who will achieve success in their matches and make us proud to be “Fifers”. We are always on the lookout for volunteers and helpers with energy, experience and knowledge at club level to assist at our FGA championships so if you are willing to help please contact David McPherson our secretary through your own club secretary.
I hope that our affiliated clubs have a great golfing year both on and off the course and your members have a very enjoyable golfing season in glorious weather. We look forward to meeting many of you at our championships and events during 2022. Fife Golfing Association has an exciting year ahead and we hope that as many of you as possible can be a part of it.

Good golfing!!

Jim McArthur
