The St Rule Club

The St Rule Club is a unique international ladies’ club that enables the members to enjoy a range of sports, exercise, activities and interests. The Club was established at the end of 1896 and is situated next to the 18th green of the Old Course. The Club has a magnificent panoramic view across the world famous St Andrews Links and the West Sands towards the Angus hills.

The St Rule Trophy is one of the leading amateur tournaments in Britain attracting an international entry. It is played as a 54 hole competition managed by St Rule volunteers in conjunction with the St Andrews Links. The overall winner receives the St Rule Trophy and the Lawson Trophy is awarded to the player with the best score in the 18 years and under category. The competition was proposed by Christo Douglas In 1982, a former Golf Captain and Chairman of The St Rule Club to promote and celebrate excellence in women’s amateur golf. Mrs Douglas was adamant that the tournament take place on a Saturday to allow working women to enter. The inaugural tournament was played on 2nd June 1984 with a strong entry including the entire US Curtis Cup team taking part and the trophy being won by one of its members, Penny Hammel.
